Let every American, every lover of liberty, every well wisher to his posterity, swear by the blood of the Revolution, never to violate in the least particular, the laws of the country; and never to tolerate their violation by others.

As the patriots of seventy-six did to the support of the Declaration of Independence, so to the support of the Constitution and Laws, let every American pledge his life, his property, and his sacred honor; let every man remember that to violate the law, is to trample on the blood of his father, and to tear the charter of his own, and his children's liberty.

Let reverence for the laws, be breathed by every American mother, to the lisping babe, that prattles on her lap; let it be taught in schools, in seminaries, and in colleges; let it be written in Primers, spelling books, and in Almanacs; let it be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed in legislative halls, and enforced in courts of justice. And, in short, let it become the political religion of the nation; and Let the old and the young, the rich and the poor, the grave and the gay, of all sexes and tongues, and colors and conditions, sacrifice unceasingly upon its altars.

While ever a state of feeling, such as this, shall universally, or even, very generally prevail throughout the nation, vain will be every effort, and fruitless every attempt, to subvert our national freedom.

Former Surgeon General Carmona speaks out

From Reuters:

The first U.S. surgeon general appointed by President George W. Bush accused the administration on Tuesday of political interference and muzzling him on key issues like embryonic stem cell research.

"Anything that doesn't fit into the political appointees' ideological, theological or political agenda is ignored, marginalized or simply buried," Dr. Richard Carmona, who served as the nation's top doctor from 2002 until 2006, told a House of Representatives committee.

"The problem with this approach is that in public health, as in a democracy, there is nothing worse than ignoring science, or marginalizing the voice of science for reasons driven by changing political winds. The job of surgeon general is to be the doctor of the nation, not the doctor of a political party," Carmona added.

For those of us who, um, remember him from his 'Tucson era,' Carmona is a bit of a Wild-West legend.

Doc Carmona, and
the shootout at Grant n' Campbell.

I was living in Tucson at the time, and remember it well. University Medical Center was right up Campbell from the intersection, and the 'legend' at the time was that Carmona shot him - then hauled him into the hospital and operated on him!

Carmona was always larger than life - a real town character. But he's also a 'no bullshit' kind of guy, independent as hell. Carmona is his own man (I wonder why he was quiet for so long? I guess we all have so much to lose.) I wish that he had said something sooner, but at least he's talking now. Maybe its a bit safer to speak out now, at last, with a Democratic Congress.
