Let every American, every lover of liberty, every well wisher to his posterity, swear by the blood of the Revolution, never to violate in the least particular, the laws of the country; and never to tolerate their violation by others.

As the patriots of seventy-six did to the support of the Declaration of Independence, so to the support of the Constitution and Laws, let every American pledge his life, his property, and his sacred honor; let every man remember that to violate the law, is to trample on the blood of his father, and to tear the charter of his own, and his children's liberty.

Let reverence for the laws, be breathed by every American mother, to the lisping babe, that prattles on her lap; let it be taught in schools, in seminaries, and in colleges; let it be written in Primers, spelling books, and in Almanacs; let it be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed in legislative halls, and enforced in courts of justice. And, in short, let it become the political religion of the nation; and Let the old and the young, the rich and the poor, the grave and the gay, of all sexes and tongues, and colors and conditions, sacrifice unceasingly upon its altars.

While ever a state of feeling, such as this, shall universally, or even, very generally prevail throughout the nation, vain will be every effort, and fruitless every attempt, to subvert our national freedom.

Obama visits Northern Indiana

Elkhart, Indiana has the highest unemployment in the country? Wow.

I knew we were struggling here in Indiana, but that is an unfortunate statistic. No wonder the state turned blue in the last election.

From the Washington Post:

President Obama heads into the belly of the beast today, leaving Washington for a depressed city in Northern Indiana with the highest unemployment rate in the nation.

Mimi Hall writes for USA Today: "Layoffs are happening across the USA — but nowhere as fast as in this once-thriving area that used to be known as the 'RV Capital of the World.' One year ago, unemployment in Elkhart County was at 4.7%. Today, it's the highest in the nation at 15.3%, fueled largely by the rapid decline in the recreational vehicle business...

"This area did not vote for Obama in November, but The Elkhart Truth newspaper is on board with that message now. 'President Obama needs to help Congress understand that the stimulus package isn't about politics. It's about survival,' the newspaper said in a Sunday editorial....

Now if we can just get the damn thing through the Senate...

Suddenly its a recession

How pathetic. Everyone on the planet knows we're careening into a full-scale depression, and suddenly the 'breaking news' of the day is that we've been in a recession since December of last year. Really now.

Tomorrow's breaking news: There are twelve months in the year, ice is made of frozen water, the ocean contains salt and wool comes from sheep.

The Economy is a giant, long-haired dog

... and it's shedding jobs!

Dispatch from the Angry Middle:

I received this 'breaking news' alert from the New York Times this morning:

Economy Shed 84,000 Jobs in August; Unemployment Rate Jumped to 6.1%

Quick - someone get a vacuum cleaner while I crawl around on the floor and try to grab a few handfuls of, um, jobs before they all disappear (see below.)

(Excuse me - the economy is 'shedding' jobs? Is that one way of saying that it is no one's fault?

The economy - like a giant, hairy dog - simply sheds jobs from time to time. This is quite natural. This just happens... no one knows why... perhaps due to the heat of the season, genetics or an 'Act of God.')

NYT:

The unemployment rate jumped to 6.1 percent in August, its highest level in five years, as the erosion of the job market showed no sign of slowing.

Employers cut 84,000 jobs last month, more than economists had expected, and the Labor Department said that more jobs were lost in June and July than previously thought.

So far, 605,000 jobs have disappeared since January. The unemployment rate, which rose from 5.7 percent in July, is now at its highest level since September 2003.

Don't you hate it when a job... gets lost? Or just disappears?

So many lost and wandering jobs. Surely some of them will find their way home?

Perhaps we should install job lighthouses up and down our coastline, in an attempt to assist those 'lost' jobs that were captured in the night, bundled onto ships, and now find themselves headed across the sea to China.
