Looking back at Lincoln: On February 1, 1850
On this day in 1850, Abraham Lincoln's second son Edward (named Edward Baker Lincoln for one of Lincoln's political friends) died of pulmonary tuberculosis, after 52 days of illness. He was not quite four years old.
Of Lincoln's four sons, only his eldest, Robert Todd Lincoln, lived into adulthood.
Lincoln lost his beloved mother Nancy Hanks, a younger brother, Thomas (who died in infancy,) and his sister Sarah -- all while at a young age. Its not surprising that he struggled with melancholy for most of his life.
